Sandbox Engineering & Design was tasked with designing a custom control board to integrate the weight sensors with a custom control algorithm to drive the main drive motor in this revolutionary weight-sensing electric skateboard. We utilized the client's requirements and existing prototype in creating a robust design that allows for customization and tweaking of the performance parameters by the client. Once the design was completed, we worked with Intuitive Motion to coordinate a PCB Assembler to assemble, program, and ship production boards to the client's manufacturing facility.
The idea for the ZBoard came from the client's senior project at the University of Southern California. Tired of bikes getting stolen and having to push skateboards up hills and over Los Angeles’ notoriously uneven streets, their goal was clear: design a device that is faster and easier to ride than a skateboard, and more fun and portable than a bike.
The client's senior project turned into a 3 year development process that included rethinking how students and young professionals commute, and designing an electric skateboard from the ground up tailored to their daily needs. Sandbox Engineering & Design provided the motor controller and sensor processing hardware to enable the product to reach production.
